Programme

Session 1

General Approach to the Poisoned Patient and Neuromuscular Toxins

In this first session we will consider the general approach to the poisoned patient which is the key in all cases, remembering that most small animal poisons cannot be treated with specific antidotes. Neuromuscular toxicity is relatively common, especially metaldehyde (slug bait) in dogs and permethrins in cats, and in this session we will go on to discuss a general approach to the treatment of patients with muscle tremors or seizures. Find out what RSI DEAD is all about!

Key points to be covered:

  • General approach to the poisoned patient including aspects of decontamination
  • Intravenous lipid emulsion: what it is, when and how to use it
  • Rational approach to neuromuscular toxicity
  • Chocolate poisoning (surely not!)

Session 2

Common Nephrotoxins and What to Do about Them

Nephrotoxins are some of the more common poisons affecting both dogs and cats. In this session we will delve into some of the more common ones in detail before discussing the management of acute kidney injury (AKI) in general terms.

Key points to be covered:

  • NSAIDs and ethylene glycol in dogs and cats
  • Vitis fruits (grapes, raisins, etc.) in dogs
  • Lily plants in cats
  • General approach to management of acute kidney injury

Session 3

Pick ‘n’ Mix of Other Common Poisons

In this final session we will look at a number of the other poisons that are relatively commonly implicated in small animal patients discussing each in detail and explaining how to go about managing affected patients.

Key points to be covered:

  • Paracetamol (acetaminophen)
  • Anticoagulant rodenticides
  • Xylitol
  • Baclofen

Course Feedback:

“Good overview. Clear answers to questions. Very informative”

“Wide range of arguments treated and practical examples. I now have a good idea of possibilities of management and can set up the practice to be prepared for some of those cases”

“Will help me by being more aggressive with treating poisonings and giving owners a more accurate prognosis”

The price includes all 3 sessions, notes and quiz – 8 hours of CPD

*No traffic jams, accommodation hassles, pet or childcare, rota clashes, locum fees ……….. just great CPD and a valuable ongoing resource.
