We will also cover monitoring of quality of life and end of life care and considerations. All aspects of the webinar will link into decisions that veterinary surgeons and owners will make during this time.

What you’ll learn:

  • Learn overall health considerations for geriatric dogs
  • Understand tools for monitoring quality of life
  • Think about end of life care and considerations

Session 2

Approach to the canine geriatric cancer patient

The sheer numbers involved in companion animal cancer demonstrate the size of the problem. It is thought that one in four dogs will develop cancer and it is the biggest killer of dogs over the age of ten. This talk will outline an approach to cancer in geriatric patients, including considerations around staging and diagnosis. The most common cancers will be discussed in greater detail, including relevant treatment options. Case examples will be used to illustrate considerations and decision making in older patients especially those with concurrent disease.

What you’ll learn:

  • List and understand the common cancers affecting older dogs
  • Understand a logical approach to staging and diagnosis
  • Consider a range of treatment options
  • Understand management of dogs with concurrent disease

Session 3

Managing canine medical conditions in old age

This talk will look at medical disease in more detail. We will cover kidney/urinary tract/ reproductive disease, common endocrine disease and liver disease, using case examples to think about the decisions made throughout individual case management. We will also cover the interpretation of common clinical pathology abnormalities in older patients (including evaluation of haematology and biochemistry parameters plus urinalysis).

What you’ll learn:

  • Understand the management of medical diseases common in old age
  • Learn how to identify and understand common clinical pathology abnormalities
  • Think about decision making (using case examples) in the treatment of common medical diseases
